SISS undertook rehabilitation work at Port Blair in the aftermath of killer tsunami on December 26, 2004 that destroyed homes, roads, and swept people out to sea. Relief operations were taken up in January 2005 in the surrounding areas of Port Blair (Andamans) along with other partner NGOs.

Tsunami destroyed hundreds of the school buildings, killing children and teachers. The schools, which were reopened after tsunami, lacked both human and infrastructural resources.
To support some of the schools which were badly damaged, SISS undertook the programme AKSHARA, a joint initiative with US-based INSAF.  This programme was launched at Hut Bay, which is the worst hit in the tsunami.

Seven out of the 11 government schools in Hut Bay were damaged by tsunami. AKSHARA supported Class X and XII students at the senior secondary schools. The reason behind selecting these sections is that the students of these classes are at higher risk of losing their valuable careers. A total of 304 students were identified and were given textbooks. Further, a reference library-cum-counselling centre was started at Government Senior Secondary School in Hut Bay to cater to the needs of all the students in Little Andaman for reference purpose. This centre will conduct regular career counselling camps to guide the higher classes students and psychological counselling programmes to heal their trauma.

Four annual scholarships would be set up for the meritorious students of Class X and XII (three from each class). An amount of Rs 6,000 for each would be awarded for the students who perform well at the school level. Students of tsunami victim families are only eligible to apply for this scholarship. These scholarships would be named after AKSHARA – INSAF. In executing its relief activities, SISS spared no efforts to involve local stakeholders.
